John,
It would certainly not *hurt* to put some lead additive in. There is *often* enough lead buildup from the early-days (70s-80s) on the heads to have formed a *semi-permanent* lead barrier on the valves and valve seats. If you were to pull the heads, and look at the bottom of the valves and seats (combustion chamber side) you would see that they have a baked on layer of brownish-black material (lead & other junk). Unless the valves are removed and messed with, this layer is usually enough to keep the old-style valves from getting burned (from what Ashcraft has told me). I'm in the process of overhauling the heads now, and my old valves have this lead-barrier very intact. It would take alot of elbow-grease with a wire-brush to remove the lead. That being said, adding lead additive - just for insurance - is not a bad idea. It's very cheap stuff, and a bottle will last you several months (or years depending on how much you drive).
If you overhaul the heads, however, make sure you have hardened seats installed or the old seats and/or valves will not survive since the lead will then be cleaned off.
