Shifting Problems

I am having problems with shifting on one of my Sonetts. Sometimes when I shift into first or second, even though the shifter pulls back or goes forward into the right position, it does not engauge. Sometime it will do this when I stop. I have learned not to shift to first unless completely stopped and then be quick about it. The problem occurs most often when going from first to second where again it acts like neutral. Funny thing is, if I pull over and stop without moving anything, shut off the engine and restart, it is in gear. This is the one I am driving but will be going in the shop as soon as another runner comes out. Any advice? Oh, sometimes if I have not shifted down to third when stopping it will lock up in fourth and requires excessive force, jiggling, and prayer to get it out of fourth.
