Yep, that nut is a p.i.t.a.
I use an open ended wrench (a 14mm I think) and alot of care to get it off.
You have to put the wrench on the nut from the top at like a 45* angle. This is hard to describe, but the wrench will not be totally on the nut. It will be on at a 45* angle with only the bottom portion of the wrench jaws grabbing the nut. Be careful not to strip the nut this way as it is easy to do.
Also, if you have taken the bottom nut off, put it back on to hold the starter in place while you remove the top nut. Otherwise the starter will be putting extra pressure on the top bolt as you unscrew the top nut.
When I put the top nut back on I dont go crazy trying to tighten it, or I'll go even crazier when it comes time to remove it again...
I'd be interested to hear how other ppl tackle this little bastard...
