My car is a '74 so it may be different, but it has a Stant 228 cap and it doesn't overheat.

It's hard to measure the heights exactly, but on my car it appears that the distance from the top flange of the filler neck to the bottom lip (where the spring-loaded rubber washer seats) is 3/4 inch. As best I can tell, the distance from the inside top sealing washer of the cap to the bottom of the spring-loaded rubber washer is slightly more than that, although not by much. Anyway, it seems to seal, although the cap doesn't pop up much when I loosen it so there can't be a lot of compression on the spring. If your cap has a LOT less than 3/4" between the top and bottom washers, you might have the wrong cap and that could be your problem.

Now that all this discussion has got me thinking about it, I may try putting another rubber washer in the bottom of the neck to increase the seal a bit, but it doesn't seem to be that big a problem (of course I don't live in Phoenix!)

Last summer I did get a little venting out the overflow tube after long drives, but I suspected that had more to do with overfilling the expansion tank than with the cap. The owner's manual says fill up the tank about halfway, but that's hard to judge in such a big horizontal tank, and a small difference could add up to a relatively large amount of coolant. Anyway, the overflow was never much -- I drive the car occasionally at track days so had to hook up a 'puke tank' to catch any spill from the overflow pipe, and during a whole summer I never accumulated more than a pint or so in the puke tank (mostly it would come out after shutting off the car after a long drive.) The tank was below the level of the overflow pipe, so the cooland wouldn't flow back in naturally -- so once in a while I'd slip a rubber hose over the vent in the puke tank and blow into it, and the air pressure would force the coolant back up the overflow hose and back into the tank!

Voice of Experience Sez: If your cap is even close to the right height and you get a LOT of overheating, I'd have to wonder whether the cap is the whole problem or not. When I first got my car it would gradually heat up after 10-15 miles of driving except on very cool days; I had to drive it with one eye on the temp gauge and take a break whenever the needle got close to the red zone. I changed caps, I changed thermostats, I used chemical flush stuff in the cooling system, I tried 'water wetter' -- nothing really helped. Finally I bit the bullet and had the radiator recored -- that solved the whole problem immediately and I've never had to worry about it again.
