I know, I get that old car/crankcase odor too. I'm not sure you can keep the engine from smelling like that, so all you can do is keep it from getting into the passenger compartment.

Are you sure you have all the holes plugged up in the firewall? There are a LOT of them, so it's easy to miss a few. Ones that have caused problems for me are the two big round grommeted holes up under the dash, visible (barely) from the engine compartment back by the brake and clutch fluid reservoirs. The wiring harness and some cables run through them; they're supposed to be sealed up with kneadable caulk (I think the old-time Saabists call this stuff "moose snot") but sometimes it works loose from movement in the cables and falls out. These two holes are definitely big enough to let smells into the car!
