Dear J"AAB and All,

I'm a big guy in the area of 6'6"" and a Sonett owner. If you like the car, you should get it and solve the other minor difficulties later. When I first bought the car, I removed the seat and used a lawnmower seat cushion to get it home. It was a bit of a bumpy ride from St. Paul to Chicago.

The car had a loud exhaust and I was once stopped by the police. Anyway, the laws are that you must have a seatbelt, The police didn't like my driving the car without a seat, but the seatbelt was there and the seat, I believe, is actually optional.

When I got back, I went to Menard's and bought some thick plywood and then to the corner car shop and bought a seat cover. I put two hinges in the plywood and cut the wood into the shape of the seat cover. Soon I had a (very) firm, thin, temporary, seat in the car that would conform to the angle of the Sonett's internal structure.

My car is not usually a daily driver. I have been slowly improving the car and considering its problems. The seats that came with the car needed recovering. I located new used seats in the Saab club magazine, NINES.

The two main parts of the problem are thickness and angle. I have extra standard Sonett seats now and can experiment with the old ones. I have a friend that does fiberglass work. My current plan is to strip the covering off one of the old seats and get my friend to change the angle between the seat back and seat bottom. I plan to mount the modified original fiberglass seat flush with the car floor and back. Later, I plan to add to the height of the seat back by adding fiberglass to make the height match the passenger seat. When I remove the upholstery from the old seat, I need to retain the old covering so that a new, modified covering can be made similar to the original.

I have not really considered lowering the floor pans yet. In these considerations, keep in mind that if you get hit in the car, it would be very bad to have your head knocking against the roof. I myself never got a pedal car for Christmas and am obsessed with small cars. Perhaps psychotherapy is an option.

Go for it--Bob
