Commentary on possible other carberetor options for the V4:
Came across a couple of carbs on ebay the other day, and being the only person who bid on them, I won them for under $10. One was a Solex 28/32 PDSIT-2 and the other a 28/32 PDSIT-3. Both are essentially the same kind of carberetor as the two models used for the Saab V4 (PDSIT-7 and PDSIT-4) except that my two use an electric choke. Also, the PDSIT-3 is essentially a mirror version of the 7, 4, and 2. The choke is on the wrong side, the bowls on the wrong side, the idle adjustment on the wrong side, accelerator pump blah blah...pretty interesting - the reason for which is discovered below.
In any case, the PDSIT-2 appears to be exactly the same as the carbs used by Saab save for the electric choke. From some poking around on the net, I'm guessing these were used in the VW Karmann Ghia (and possibly other type-2/3 VW's - would love any VW's folks to comment on this) - The Ghia used dual carbs that were, surprise!, mirror images of each other in their design. The "2" designated one image and the "3" designated the other.
So, what about their suitability to the V4?
The 3 would fit on the V4, but only if the spacer between the intake and the carb were changed a bit to not have all those pipes poking out of it (maybe a forged one that is a spacer only). Because things are backwards on the 3, one of the pipes gets in the way of the throttle linkage. Unfortunately, my shop manual for the V4 doesn't show any images of the spacer...though I happen to have 2 of them and they are both somewhat different - perhaps there is an early spacer that doesn't have the pipes on it?
The 2 fits wonderfully!
So, does anyone have a clue how the electric choke is operated? It has a single spade connector that actually says "12v" on it...I'm guessing that 12v is constantly applied to it and the bimetallic strip inside the choke either turns it on or off...anyone with VW experience able to tell if this sounds about right? Though, for vintage racing, I will likely disable the choke completely...but it would be nice to know...
Anyway - I will attempt to use the "2" on my car and will report how it behaves...the engine at the moment is on a stand in the back of my garage after a rebuild, and I'm going to have to find somewhere that can provide rebuild parts for this Solex, so it may be a while. :o)
