If the 'modified Saab 96 one-pipe' system is actually the Y-pipe system from Motor Sport Services of New York, it's BETTER than the stock dual system, so you might want to leave it on unless returning the car to stock is important (as it might be for concours or competition in stock classes.)
Identification points for the MSS system:
-- Tubes run down from the heads and join just aft of the transaxle drain plug, forming a Y.
-- Sound reduction is via a large, flattened glass-pack muffler that runs from aft of the Y to just ahead of the rear axle tube. A smaller rear muffler is an option for quieter street performance.
-- Single exhaust exits just inside the left rear suspension.
If the system on the car is actually a homemade or 96 adaptation (one tipoff would be the Saab 96 'dumbbell' resonator crosswise under the nose) you might want to consider the MSS system as an alternative to reconstructing the OEM Sonett duals, as it's somewhat easier to install.
