Bob, if I understand what you are saying this is not the correct hookup. It will cause the ammeter to read alternator output when charging but not read battery drain when load exceeds alternator output (the simple case of this is when there is any drain but engine is off; but it will also happen at times with engine on). When load exceeds output the meter will simply read zero instead of negative (indicating drain) as it should.
This is a little hard to clearly convey in words and much simpler if I could post a drawing but I don't know how, so here's some words: The ammeter needs to go in the line to the battery + terminal that carries everything but starter current. (This line may be physically connected at the battery or at the starter, vehicles vary. I cannot give you physical point-to-point because my own wiring harness is much modified and I no longer know how it was originally.) You can't run the starter motor through the ammeter, it will not handle the starter current. That way it measures current flow into (+ on the meter, indicating battery charging) or out of (- on the meter, indicating battery discharging) the battery. You might find a friendly party at the carparts store who will let you look the instructions or copy them from an ammeter kit that they sell. Use 10-gauge wire for the ammeter circuit.
