I've been told by people who have done this that the rear body is more important than you might think. There are steel blades bonded in over the door arches and a steel tube crossways above the windshield -- these plus the fiberglass itself help the car resist the temptation to fold itself in half* when you run over a bump. (Fiberglass does have some strength -- Colin Chapman made a car, the Lotus Elite, with a completely fiberglass chassis!)

People who have decapitated their Sonetts successfully add a lot of reinforcement to the chassis platform to replace the stiffness provided by the body.


Re some of the other remarks: I agree that in most cases it's probably better to let your Sonett be. On the other hand, if Pete has just rolled his, or a barn fell on it or something, roadsterizing it might be a better alternative than scrapping it...



*Before I got back into VSAABS, I briefly owned a Fiat/Abarth 1000, which was basically a Fiat 850 Spyder with a punched-out 1-liter engine. I encountered a mechanic who had trained in Italy, who said that these roadsters were reinforced by an X-shaped brace under the body, and this brace often rusted out. He said it wasn't uncommon around Milan, where he had lived, to see crumpled specimens of these cars abandoned on the street, after the owner hit the streetcar tracks and the car actually DID fold up!
