Finally digging into the sonett Posted by Greg [Email] (#200) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Greg) on Thu, 19 Aug 2004 11:37:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I need some advice on what my primary focus should be when restoring an old sonett.
So, the history first. My dad bought this sonett 20 years ago when I was a wee lad. It's a 1974 sonett III. He took the engine out and had it cleaned up and the top end messed with, but did not do a complete restore. He also refurbished a lot of other things like the clutch and brake master cylinders, transmission and patched a few small holes of rust.
Today, the rust has taken over from the fire wall back. I'm bringing it in to my welding class at the community college to solve that problem. When I took it out of service, the engine ran fine, but the clutch slipped and the master cylinders look like crap. Second gear was also acting up a bit so I'll dig into the tranny a bit too. I'm replacing the entire electrical system because i'm sick of intermittent gremlins.
My question is what about the engine? It was running fine, but I don't want another repeat of an episode like when my balance shaft gear exploded 100 miles into the middle of nowhere. Most of the mechanicals in the engine are bone stock. After 30 years of driving...where should I concentrate my preventative maintenance?
