Check the engine ground strap. "Sudden" movement of needles in these electrical gauges may also indicate an electric issue.
My 69 Sonett's failing gauge and sender have been repaired by cleaning the engine ground strap connections at the manifold and frame. Apparently an excess of the alternator voltage was forced through the temperature meter when too much resistance at the strap was present. The current increase through the wire and meter mimiced the lower resistance through a hotter temperature sender.
