The heat is due to increased resistance. The contact points are wearing or acquiring build-up that is reducing the current flow. The switch is becoming another electrical resistance in series with whatever else is being operated at that time.
Measure the voltage drop between the hot batery lead going in and the switched RUN lead going out when the fan or lights are on. Any voltage difference between the hot and RUN leads at the switch indicates a resistance in the switch.
A test can also be performed by checking the Ohms resistance through the switch with the hot input lead from the battery removed. Resistance should be less than 1 or 2 ohms. Note that the Ohm meter's internal battery can't put as much current through the switch so the voltage drop test is more indicative of compromised contacts.
