You guessed right. After riding shotgun in the '04 Saab-toberfest ("this is a parade, not a race!", ahem) I wanted to bring my Sonett the next time, so I went for this particular tire size to get a lower aspect ratio, more tread on the road and identical circumference so the speedo (more importantly, the odometer for rallying) would still agree. Then I noticed that at these aspect ratios, you need a 1/2 inch wider wheel than a soccerball. Then that meant looking for mags, and that's how all this started.
But I didn't mention that I also rebuilt the speedometer using a head from another vintage Saab bought on ebay--turns out that the VDO speedometers from VSAABs are NOT identical! After I discovered the problem, I noticed that the faceplates are calibrated differently across vintage units. Maybe the 3-speed cars were set up differently. Lesson: don't mix vintage Saab trannies and speedometers. So I'm going to take it out one more time and find a working head from another V4 Sonett--whenever I find one!
