I don't think you know a lot about battery chargers Posted by 72saabsonett [Email] (#283) [Profile/Gallery] (more from 72saabsonett) on Fri, 31 Mar 2006 02:41:29 In Reply to: Re: Battery and Alternator capacity should be matched., AndersOZ, Tue, 14 Mar 2006 17:37:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
To get more amps you need a greater potential (difference in voltage) between the charger and the batterry. When we perform equalizing charges on our emergency battery banks at work (I'm an Nuclear engineer) The charger voltage is raised about 3-4 volts from the float volatge or 135 (130 vDC battery)and this raises the amps to do the charge but only to about 10 amps from 5 amps. A car alternator maintains the battery but is a real inefficient charger. If the voltage regulator works properly the amps charging the battery wouldbe the same for either alternator. The difference is the larger amlternator will supply more amps to a large load (stereo amp etc) This keeps the battery from discharging as long as the car is running. It's also why people with a weak battery and a C900 cv like my wife has can raise and lower the top with the car running but not with a weak or bad battery. The larger alternator suppies the current needed for the motors in that case. But a GOOD battery should be able to raise or lower the top without the car running.
