easy to do....remove one of the tapered pins that hold the linkage together, near where the backup light switch is, under the hood, there is a large universal joint, remove the pin from here.

if you are lucky, they are the original style, threaded on both ends, take the nut off one side, place it on the other, and it will extract the pin in the process.

slide the joint apart, and what is left in the tranny can be shifted using an ice pick or an awl, it will have the same shift pattern as the car, feel around for first gear, and then get in the car and see if it will move.

it could simply be too much gunk in the tranny has gummed up the shift linkage, or the universal joints have too much slop.

I'm out of town until saturday, but could come take a look if you need it.
