Demand makes those cars worth more. Low demand for Sonetts makes them affordable for persons of modest means. One can easily justify spending $30K for a paint job on a car worth $2 million. I don't know too many people who would be willing to shell out $5-10K for a paint job on a $5,000 car. My 1972 Sonett has over 300K miles on it and after 20 years of daily driving looks like cr*p, but still has the same lines, is rarer than ever, and turns heads. Show quality paint makes sense for a car that is valuable, is shown for trophies and cash, sits in a museum or is rarely driven, not for a daily driver. My enjoyment comes from driving them, so mechanical relability is most important. When it comes to appearance, three coats of enamel are sufficient for crusing the highways and byways. A stone kicked up from a truck is going to chip a $5,000 paint job the same as a $500 paint job. Larry, your dedication to esthetics is admirable and there is certainly nothing wrong with lavishing resources on something you love. I believe for most people economics is a very important factor in deciding how much they are willing to spend to purchase and maintain a car.
