New to this group and hoping to make myself welcome by sharing and especially asking. I have owned 2 S-3's in the past (nearly killed myself in the first -- ahhh, high school) lost a 2d having fallen on hard times, and now have regained a third. I'll post a photo when they let me, but it's an orange late '74 with factory A/C, no rust, rear compartment floor already replaced with f/glass (I would have done that anyway) 41k miles, and lots of parts. I paid $2,700 for the package. Considering what I've been reading here, it seems like I got a pretty good buy. Now that I think of it, my first cost me $2,500 and had the same mileage in 1978.

Here's what else I got:

⁃ A rear compartment window and both side wing windows
⁃ A front bumper cover
⁃ Five starter motors
⁃ Four generators
⁃ A transmission
⁃ Nine (count 'em) alloy soccer-ball wheels.

There's also a box with an assortment of other more peripheral stuff, none of it mechanical or (to me, at least) critical. The parts alone might pay for the car.

Right now I just want to get this vehicle baselined so that I can maintain it in the future. I have it at a N. Illinois shop 200 miles away that gets good reviews, but seems more interested in their bread-and-butter business than looking for the parts permitting them to deal with my issues. Incredibly, this shop now has two Sonnets they're working on at once. The owner of the other f-glassed over the pop-up headlights (gaaaak!) and did a very poor job. It's an abomination.

It worries me that they don't answer their phone and don't return calls. I haven't spoken to anyone there since Christmas, and am thinking about flying up there this week (did I mention I'm a pilot?) to speak with them. I expect to hear about parts once again: "What can we do? It's not our problem.")

Here's what I'm trying to do at the shop (not in priority order):

⁃ Replace belts and hoses (not very interesting)
⁃ Convert the A/C from R11 to R14 (I think that's right) that at least means hoses and Schroeder valves (not yet started)
⁃ Rebuild and bleed the brake system (slaves done, master pending parts)
⁃ Rebuild and bleed the clutch system (also pending parts)
⁃ Optimize suspension (done)
⁃ Replace carb with Holley for Mustang (not done but parts available)
⁃ Replace points and rotor with electronic (yes, it is in the distributor)
⁃ Get 5 new tires (not a problem, although there's only one manufacturer).
⁃ Replace the exhaust system (major problem, but you've already helped some).

The S. I have now has dual straight pipes with small glasspacks and no mufflers. It sounds like a monster truck. Their "system" is brand new (thank God) and they did it to rid themselves of the car. I know from experience that the stock system is a dual with crosspipe under the dash, 1 glasspack apeice and two small mufflers in the rear wheelwells. The stock system I last got was dark blue when new. I think a Sonnet is most elegant when quiet and the back-pressure doesn't hurt either. We can trade 0-to-60 stories later; I have some.

So: Here's what I need some help with:

⁃ A brake master cylinder or rebuild kit
⁃ A clutch cylinder or rebuild kit
⁃ Advise on the exhaust system (I've read your posts on MSS and I'm thinking about the Y-pipe thing)
⁃ Anything any of you can think of where I'm f**kd-up somewhere.
'
I'd be really grateful.

In the meantime, I hope to be a regular contributor here. I've rebuilt an S3 engine, understand the goofy shift linkage, can talk about undercarrage rust issues, and can offer moral support when things just seem impossible at 3am.

I hope you'll have me.
