Bob,

Well said. Living in the salt-infested Northeast means most of the ones that show up for sale are rotted to pieces. I've done extensive rust repair on VSaabs too many times and I don't want to start another one. A friend of mine has two Sonetts that he keeps wanting me to buy. One has a totally rusted out chassis and the other has an "unrusted" chassis (yeah, right- unrusted) but was involved in a front-end accident. "Come on" he says, "you can make one really good Sonett out of two! $1000 for BOTH of them!" Now if these things were $WORTH$ anything, I could see it. Sad to say, I could go through all that repair and the result might bring what- $2500?

With all that said, there was a day when I would have taken on such a project with relish. My last one was a total Fred Flintstone 93F. The ENTIRE undercarriage was gone. I spent a year bending and hammering and welding and pounding and finally got the undercarriage solid again. Then I looked at the rest of the car- seats had gone back to Mother Earth (ashes to ashes, dust to dust), no headliner, no gauges, motor totally shot, missing lots of parts under the hood, etc etc- and decided it would never happen for me. So I sold it (sigh) to someone who was totally stoked to finish it up.

There is a wonderful sense of accomplishment to take on a project like that AND see it through. But you have to have the enthusiasm for it.

With a Sonett, if it truly was ONLY some rust in the floor panels and a rusted through trunk, it wouldn't be that big a deal. It's the rockers and the rear axle tunnel that I'd pass on.
