When we bought our '84 900 I was astounded that Saab recommendedchanging the oil at the 1000 mile break in service *AND NEVER AGAIN!*This is gearbox suicide for the reasons Sesh's mechanic gave (i.e. lotsof non-magnetic wearing surfaces gumming up the oil). Besides, the magnetic plug has only so much capacity!I also have a '74 Alfa GTV which I bought new. It currently has over 230,000miles on it and both the gearbox and differential have been zero problem items. Why? Because I change the gear oil in them every 12,000 by thebook. I picked 15,000 as the closest equivalent service on the Saab andchange the trans then. With over 62,000 miles currently, the transaxle has been completely trouble free and shifts as smooth as new.In contrast, my in-laws (who liked our Saab so much they bought one too, eight months after us) just follow the book. With only 32,000 on their '85the shifting is stiff and 'graunches' into third. When I convinced themto change the transaxle oil, we found an enoumous, full capacity deposit on the magnetic plug and the oil had a heavy metallic sheen (as compared to a light sheen in a frequently changed box).Changing the transaxle oil every 7,500 miles as recommended by Sesh's mechanicwon't hurt anything, but it seems a little excessive, based on my experience. After all, if you follow the book that would be changing the transaxle every time you change the engine! (as you may have guessed, I change my engine every 3,750).Jack Hagerty, Robotic Midwives, Ltd.uunet!lll-winken!rml!jack orrml!jackno39sdcx6spamx782lll-winken.llnl.gov Posts in this Thread:
