loud squealing []
Posted by Rick Golde - (more from Rick Golde - on Wed, 17 Nov 2004 11:28:32

I have a 1988 900S that I cannot bear to part with but the loud squealing
from the fan belts just about wakes the neighbors up in the morning. It is
especially bad in colder weather. I tried belt dressing, had the local Saab
mechanic replace the belts and adjusted them (which I can imagine is very
difficult since you can barely see them tucked up against the firewall) and
even had the pulley assembly replaced (one mechanic said that is what was
causing the squeal......he was wrong). I also know it isn't the A/C
compressor or belt because I disconnected the belt when the thing froze up
just after I bought it a few years ago. I refuse to give in to my domestic
car mechanic's warning that buying this car would eventually become a SOB
(Saab) story, this shouldn't be such a hard thing to figure out and solve.
Kind of like the clicking brakes, nobody had been able to tell me why the
brakes on this thing keep clicking when you slow down (all the way down to
the stop from 30-40 mph.....quite irritating but nobody can find what is
causing it so on and on we go).

So, anyone out there have any good advice on the squealing fan belts (or the
clicking brakes too)???
