Vs: 99 engine problems
Posted by Pekka Harju (more from Pekka Harju) on Wed, 19 Jul 2000 23:11:10
Dear Mr. Malmström, dear Saabnow friends,
1979 Saab 99 has the classic B type engine which has been in use since 1973. I am not quite familiar with all modifications which were needed to be done to convert this quite moderate tuned gasoline engine into petroleum operated. I do know that pistons are similar to the ones used in turbo engines, and that the cylinder head gasket is different from standard. Also there is a special electronically controlled system which changes from gas to petroleum and vice versa.
A thorough service manual is a very handy help whenever you spend your day off under the hood. I have found Haynes manuals very clear and still they are enough detailed. Haynes has published a Saab manual which is suitable for all 99 and 900 models from early 70s to late 80s. It is available both in English and Finnish, although - I think - that the English version is more thorough. Haynes manuals can be bought in well equipped book shops and car parts outlets. If you live in (or close to) Helsinki, the best way to get yours is to go directly to the Alfamer tech book shop - I think the address is Sturenkatu or something.
Best regards
Pekka Harju Lohja, Finland Several 99s and 900s - and the story goes on...:)
