I too have a 9000 CSE, year 97. The last two months it started making a
noise consistent with either:

a. small plastic gears being very loose and dry (constant creaking is the
best way to describe it).

b. hard plastic, as may be in ducting tubes, which is creaking at a joint.

Mine too seems to come from the driver side (right hand side in my case).
I chickened out from paying money to the dealer to find the fault whilst
the car was still under guarantee but I intend to take the top of the dash
off in the next 4 weeks.

The speedo and tachometer are electrically driven so you don't have the
possibility of cables grinding.

Mine is more noticeable when the car is cold (mornings) cannot hear it
when the car is hot, and does not change with RPMs.

Finally, there is a gadget (what does it do?) which runs all the time but
it is especially noticeable for a few seconds after the engine is
switched off.

Good luck.
Charles
