Are the spark plugs tight? Sure it is not an exhaust leak?

How long has the engine ran since the head was off? Sometimes it takes a
while for the lifters to quiet down. Make sure the oil tube fittings were
replaced and didn't get cracked on -88 heads.

If the engine has ran an hour or so and the lifters are still noisy, remove
the valve cover and the oil tube assembly and make sure a good supply of oil
is reaching the head while cranking the engine over (but not starting). Check
the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. If the pressure is good, look for
the blockage to the head ( debris from the repair, or an improperly installed
or wrong head gasket). If pressure is low, check filter and oil pump for
clogging/damage from debris from the repair.
