Cort,

there's a rectangular rubber coupler in the linkage, just before it enters
the tranny. This tends to separate after many years of use. A good test is
to engage 3rd gear, and then have an assistant push the shifter (firmly)
from side to side while you look under the hood for separation of the rubber
piece.

When it fails, you can temporarily fix it with a couple of hose clamps, but
this is quite a PITA. The part (75 76 416) is costs a mere $12.56 at
http://www.townsendimports.com.
It's well worth the trouble and aggravation

it can save - like getting stranded and having to get towed home. A new one
every 5 years would be about right.

Just as a side note, the latest C900 cars (end of '91 through '93 incl.
'94convertible) have a similar rectangular rubber block in the shifter
linkage. Earlier cars use a one-piece metal/rubber/metal contraption, which
is a bigger pain to replace and requires shifter alignment afterwards.

When repairing the shifter linkage, you may find that the rubber boot on the
tranny side has deteriorated, or failed completely. To replace it, you need
to remove the taper-pin-nut & washer (83 35 002 & 80 29 944), tap out the
taper-pin (83 75 172), and pull off the tranny-side shifter bracket from the
shifter rod. Do not disturb the clamp-bolt on the firewall-side of the
linkage, or you'll have to adjust/align the whole thing. The new
tranny-side boot is part number 40 29 575. Slip it on, and re-assemble the
linkage pieces, preferrably using a new pin/washer/nut and rubber coupler.

Best regards,
