Help in choosing NG900 engine replacement option
Posted by M Fenster & J. Meinert (more from M Fenster & J. Meinert) on Tue, 13 Jul 1999 11:01:53
The words of many wise persons here have somewhat prepared me for
what has happened. My '94 NG900SE with the V-6, 2.5L motor has about 38
kilomiles on it. An out-of-town friend was driving it on the highway
last week when it died, a puff of smoke & all instrument lights came
on. Fortunately, it was warm, she was on a well-traveled highway, and
close to a phone. Yup, the timing belt either slipped or broke. It
happened about 4000 miles after being replaced at the dealer. As they
look into the damage, which they're leading me to expect will be a
warranty replacement of the motor, I'm taking your advice and
considering options.
1. I have a 5-speeed tranny. If they offer a replacement engine,
would a 2.0 L bolt up to the transmission? I have the traction control,
and it works well, but I could get by without it. Also, I would assume
a new computer would nave to be installed. So basically what I'm
considering is having them install another type engine, a 4 -Cyl turbo.
What other work would they need to perform? I expect I'd have to pay
for at least some of it, but having this type of breakdown on a remote
road in the winter with my 4-year old in the car would not be a fun
experience!
2. The loaner they are letting me drive is a '99 9-3SE with a turbo
engine, possibly a 2.3 L. It's got about 12 kilomiles on it. On a trip
to Denali Park in it this weekend, I was pretty impressed with it's gas
mileage, turbo boost, and handling. Would trading up to the 9-3 be a
good choice if I were offered a decent deal? It's really similar in
many respects to my car; auto climate control, leather, sunroof, info
computer, etc. Any downfalls I should look for? I think it's been a bit
mistreated, being a loaner, but not in bad condition.
Thanks for any leads and helpful information.
