If memory serves, access to the airbox assembly is by removing the LH wheel, and the LH fender liner forward half.
Now, if what you're telling me is that it's a K&N filter that mounts inside the fender, I'd remind you that you're going to be doing this (pulling the wheel, pulling the fender liner, removing the filter, washing and oiling it, reinstalling everything) every 6 months or so.
The gains from a K&N are modest, and only if you keep it reasonably clean. And don't over-oil it or you'll just be dumping excess oil into your mass-airflow sensor.
FWIW we don't have a K&N in our '92 9000T, but we do have one (a Dinan setup) in our '98 BMW 540i. Same drill (fender liner has to come out to clean it.)
