Getting rid of the dreaded Shift Up light
Posted by Rogier van Bakel (more from Rogier van Bakel) on Sun, 9 Sep 2001 22:26:08
I love my Saab (a five-speed '97 SE Turbo convertible, 76K miles), but I CAN'T STAND the 'Shift Up' light on the instrument panel. It would be one thing if this piece of crap, conceived by busybodies with an advanced degree in social engineering of the most paternalistic kind, actually did something useful. Hell, I'd settle for the light being moderately CORRECT every once in a while. It isn't. It'll tell you to shift to fifth even if you're doing 40mph in fourth, going uphill. In other words, it's pathetic, it's useless, it's infuriating, it's distracting, and I Will Have No More Of It! <g>
When I took the car in for maintenance a couple of weeks ago and asked the dealer if the light could be easily disabled, I was told no, and to just put a piece of black tape over it. Now, I'd tried that already -- I stuck it on the plastic 'pane' that covers the instrument panel. But this still allows the glow of the orange light to seep around the edges of the piece of tape, which is pretty distracting. Clearly, I need to temporarily remove the plastic pane and stick the black tape directly onto the surface of the instrument panel itself.
How to remove the pane, though? Does it just pop out with the aid of a screwdriver or something similar? Or would I likely be cracking it? Any tips appreciated.
Thanks,
Rogier van Bakel
