electrical problems [saabnow]

Message from D & M Mackay Subject: electrical problems ================= Recently I have been having some electrical problems which the dealers do not appear to be able to rectify on my 91 9000CD Auto (230,000km)
Problem started with EDU showing 'ERR' every time the ignition key is turned on. Dealer said battery low, so in goes a new battery. Problem persists. Despite numerous visits, they do not have a clue
Couple of weeks ago, wife drove car and called to say that it would not start (i.e. no crank). Had her double check that selector was firmly in park. Car started. problem solved - I thought.
Problem became intermittent, but every time I tried the car, it would start. Needless to say, dealer could not find anything wrong, other than to say - we probably require a new starter motor.
Then the radio began losing security code and alarm system loses memory, indicating that the battery has been disconnected. No joy from dealer
Last week, I was with her, and upon trying to start car, I noticed all the dash lights flash a couple of times when I turned the key, and then would not crank, did not even hear the solenoid clicking. Sat for a while (swearing naturally) and eventually decided to fire the starter motor. Naturally radio and security system have lost their memory
Back it goes to dealer - result, car requires starter motor. What about dash lights flashing I ask, No idea was the response. Therefore I told them that there was no way that I was spending the money on a starter motor, when I was not convinced that this was the problem
Yesterday, when I drove the car, it started fine, but when I went to shut it down, the motor went off, but all the dashboard lights stayed on. Turned the key on and off a couple of times to no avail, so I tried starting engine, which it did, but it was as if the computer said, 'hey I'm not supposed to be operating' engine hesitated, then smoothed out.
Turned key off, everything went off
Has anyone had anything similar? electrical problems bother me, especially when the local dealer cannot (or will not - they have been trying for some time to get me to buy a newer version) fix the problem, and this is the car that my wife drives most of the time.
Due to these intermittent electrical 'glitches' I do not think that the starter motor is at fault, because as long as all dash lights come on, the starter motor fires beautifully. Could it be the ignition switch, or the main relay acting up?
Any ideas would be appreciated
regards
David Mackay
