And it's quite disconcerting....
i remember how that is ! i had some trouble...and i found the fix ina series of steps...seemed complicated at first, but its not.
heres a link to great info about the components...
ofcourse maybe u have a bad major component in the system (like water pump or radiator), but i started with a new themostat-- a cooler one...and a genuine SAAB one-- the SAAB one is different ! dont listen to people who tell u otherwise. Then draining and flushing the system was the next step. Use Mercedez Benz Coolant (i think volvo coolant is the same), bc it is better (see the info at the link). this solved my trouble.
maybe u will need to go farther. i quote from this link :
Over time, and with those occasional top offs, the coolant becomes unknown and begins to break down. Phosphates and silicates and produced aluminum oxides fall out of suspension building up and promoting electrolysis, pitting of the aluminum surfaces and the main gaskets and seals. The deposits of these phosphates and oxides in the layers of the head gasket splits it like ice in pavement. Concentration becomes unknown and thus its freezing point unknown.

good luck jay
