Correct voltage to Alternator? [saabnow]

Subject: Correct voltage to Alternator?
=================
Greetings all,

The alternator stopped charging the battery, but tests out OK at the
parts stores. I actually still suspect the alternator's at fault, but
since the car's had a few electrical quirks, I want to first verify that
the voltage to the D+ (smaller) terminal on the alternator is what it
should be. Seems it should be closer to 12V than 0v, and I'm getting
3.6V. Anyone know off-hand how much voltage is needed to reliably
pre-charge the alternator field so I can be sure that circuit's OK?
Bently manual doesn't specify.

Thanks much,

-Dick
