Well, this technical question turned debate has potential to rage on for a
bit. I can't resist putting in my two cents as I'm simply overflowing with
opinions on this subject.
I wholeheartedly agree with the list member who advocated driver control of
all exterior lights. I find it infuriating that that is not standard with
most newer vehicles. The light setup of the earlier Saabs and Subarus was by
far the best I've used. That is, the driver had control of the lights, but
could leave the switch on and control them with the ignition.
In a way, unfortunately, this all follows the popular trend of attempting to
human-proof everything since so many people simply can't be trusted to think
for themselves.
However, I must disagree in part with Steve and the NMA. Having headlights
forced on during daytime hours could certainly cause issues(much like the
foolish notion of having overhead streetlights on rural roads), but I can't
fathom how the net effect can't be positive. I have never found DRLs
annoying on other cars; only those people who leave high-beams on during the
day (back to humans that don't think or pay attention. Moreso, headlights of
any sort are so obviously valuable in seeing other vehicles in many weather
conditions such as rain, fog or bright sunshine (especially dawn or dusk). I
see examples of this every day and am short one close friend because of
exactly such a situation.
My apologies if that came off as a rant.
