=================
acouple of points are missing about DRL's.

The first is that obscuring directionals is a moot point, as American drivers
by and large, do not use their signals, wether it be for turns, lane changes,
or other maneuvers. One of the few times you will see an active turn signal
is when a driver has a breakdown, and leaves his hazards on by the side of
road as to ensure a dead battery when he/she returns several hours later.

I agree with another post that bright lights are much more of a visibility
problem than DRL's. Especially when people on a 4-lane freeway fail to dim
lights for oncoming traffic - because that extra 5010 feet of median dims the
lights adequately of course!

Also, while I agree that DRL's could serve to obscure visibility of
pedestrians, bicyclists, and non-DRL drivers, it also prevents the morons out
there from driving at night with no headlights - or better yet, those that
drive at dusk with just parking lights on (because it looks cooler or
something).

As a motorcyclist, I constantly deal with issues of visibility to other
motorists, have witnessed first hand how a headlight can improve your
visibility and prevent people from turning left in front of you, etc.

While I do wish to turn off my DRL's occasionally - such as the previously
mentioned snow scenario - I have to think that they do some good.

As an industrial designer, I am well aware of the 'poeple-proof it' theory of
product developement. Of course, if driver education and licensing policies
were a little stricter, maybe we could keep some of the people off the road
who feel that driving is secondary task, rather than a task requiring your
primary and undivided attention - therefor reducing the necessity for DRL's
and other idiot proof safety devices. But that's an entirely different
topic....
