Crank seal replacement
Posted by Jack Brooks (more from Jack Brooks) on Tue, 21 Sep 1999 10:31:45
Looking at my Haynes manual the crank seal replacement on the 1988, 16 valve
9000 engine (B202) looks very straight forward. Pull the plastic fender
liner, two belts, crank pulley and change out the seal. Yes, this in only
the big picture, but am I missing something significant? Also, is this 140
ft-lb. torqued crank pulley bolt a standard thread, or reversed thread?

Also, is there anything else I should be replacing or checking (i.e.., motor
mount) while I am disassembling in this area? BTW - This is an engine
with a manual (non-automatic) serpentine belt tension adjuster.

I've had an oil leak on this side of the engine for a year or two and am
running out of cardboard to protect the garage floor <grin>. Since I am
replacing the rattling A/C idler (the aftermarket replacement pulley/bearing
assembly is inexpensive from Townsend Imports) and both belts, I figure this
is a good time to replace, what I believe is, a leaky crankshaft seal too,
even if I don't need to pull the wheel liner to change out the A/C idler
pulley.

Thanks in advance,
