About two years ago my tranny starting doing that, except it was popping out of reverse. It got to the point where I couldn't even keep it in reverse by holding it there. I drove for about 8 months with it like this, the last four months were the Flintstone months.. I had no reverse, and had to back up with my foot out the door (that takes some planning when it comes to parking :-)).
Finally, the clutch went, and I had to get it all replaced. It got a rebuilt tranny for $1350, and a clutch kit for $300, and labor was $300. Not bad, but not small change, either.
Good luck, Ben 85 900 Turbo 234kmiles
