Passenger door won't open on classic 900
Posted by Gareth Pointer (more from Gareth Pointer) on Thu, 7 Oct 1999 09:35:50
Dear All,

I have a problem with my 1984 Saab 900 saloon. The front passenger door
won't open. The door lock appears to be working in that in the locked
position, pulling the door handle does nothing and does not feel as
though any mechanism is engaging. With the lock up, the handle feels as
though it is engaging with whatever mechanism inside the door should
operate the latch but not quite enough (if you know what I mean).

This problem has appeared out of the blue, I have had no previous
problems with the door and it has not dropped on it's hinges. I have
managed to get the door open a couple of times since this happened and
was planning to get the internal door trim off and examine the latch
mechanism. However, when I got home I was unable to open the door (it
appears to be really stuck this time!) On the two occasions that I was
able to open the door I examined the latch, which appears to have three
positions: closed, fully open and somewhere in-between. Comparing with
the other door latches, pulling the handle appears to push the latch
from closed to the fully open position, thus opening the door. On the
two occasions with the problem door I managed to open it, the latch was
only being pushed to the 'half-way' position and I managed to get the
door open by pulling upwards and out. Now however, the latch does not
appear to move at all when I pull the door handle.

Anybody got any ideas how to get the door open? Failing that, is it
possible to get the internal trim off the door without opening the door?

Yours despairing and frustratedly,
Gareth

P.S. We in the UK are phasing out leaded petrol from January 1st. I am
currently running my Saab on leaded petrol - what are my options? I
would like to be able to run the thing on bog-standard unleaded (it's
such a gas guzzler)
