Hi,

You should be able to remove the door panel with the door shut. The problem
is the passenger's seat (I pressume you are talking right hand drive). It
will probably be held to the floor pan by 4 allen bolts which you'll have to
remove and move the seat to the rear.

A couple of pointers. On the underside of the arm rest on the door there are
two or three large headed Pozidrive screws holding it in place.
The plastic trims for window wind mechanism has to be removed (clips on) and
the handle unscrewed.
The plastic plate behind the latch lever has to be removed as well (clips
on from underneath the lever).
Finally, if you have the 'round' pin for the locking mechanism (press down to
lock the door thing, next to the window) you must unscrew it.

All threads are normal rotation.

--------------------------------------------

The panel is 'stuck' on the door with plastic pins and you are better off
having the right tool for pulling the pins off the door (a bit like a very
large headed screwdriver, split like a fork and bend to form a lever).

--------------------------------------------

On your fuel question, it might be worth checking with SAAB as around 1984/5
(i think 84 for carburettor engines) cars could run on unleaded.

I had priced doing the head of my 83 at UK pounds 200 for parts and factory
work. Labour was mine. (That is, about 70pounds for 4 exhaust valve seats,
40 pounds for gaskets, 30-40 pounds for refacing the head + local tax). The
factory man argued that because the SAAB has an alloy head its valve seats
will be already hardened (although not necessarily to unleaded spec).

I cannot tell you what I'll do with my 83 as I sold it and got a 9000. I am
not sure you'll save much on fuel costs as you loose quite a bit of
performance with unleaded. You will need to use more fuel :-(

Regards
Charles
