Buying Advice: Used 1990-92 9000
Posted by Masur, Joshua M (more from Masur, Joshua M) on Tue, 16 Nov 1999 14:26:05
The other shoe has finally dropped: my '85 900T has a blown head gasket and at 190,000 mi, I'm cutting bait. I want to replace it with a 9000, preferably with less than about 100,000 mi, and for budgetary reasons, I don't think I can afford to jump to the newer body style. (Hatch vs. sedan is irrelevant to me.)
So I think I'm looking at a 1990-92 model. The problem is, there were a number of changes to the basic mechanics during that time, especially the engine. As I understand it, 1990 saw the introduction of direct fuel injection and a new turbo; 1991 (or 1990.5?) brought the 2.3; and 1992 brought Trionic. (Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these dates.)
Does anyone have specs for the various models? I can't find them anywhere.
What about personal experiences with the variations, especially the 2.3 vs. 2.0 in turbo and normal configurations, and 5spd vs. auto (in terms of reliability/longevity more than the personal choice of stick vs auto)?
And last but not least, any suggestions for places to find one in the SF Bay Area besides TSN, local newspaper ads, and AutoTrader?
Thanks!
