I think most, if not all persons will tell you that the 5-spd 9000 is far preferable to the automatic unit, unless you can be sure that the car was driven 'conservatively'. The naturally aspirated 2.3l with Direct Ignition was introduced in 1990.5 - and in my opinion is far better than the 2.0l (turbo and natural) configurations. Some people will even contend that the natural 2.3l (with 150 hp) is still underpowered for the 9000 - so you can imagine what it must be like to drive the natural 2.0l (about 135 hp as I understand). The number one area of failure, that most persons seem to have with early DI cars, is failure of the DI unit itself. Later versions of the DI unit (which can be identified by a removable electrical connector on the end of the unit - early versions had no connector, just a wire that went inside the unit) are allegedly more reliable. Interesting to note that in new gen 900s, the DI unit was eliminated for the natural 2.3l engine, in favor of breakerless distributor instead. Another difference is the introduction of the manual A/C controls in base 9000s (all non-turbo units) in the 1990.5 (2.3l era) models. Although you loose the automatic 15-button ACC unit, you do have manual ventilation controls, which may cost less to repair/replace in the long run. I believe the 1990.5 model year was also the first year of ACC II in the 9000s which can be identified by an 'OFF' button on the ACC unit and a centrally located sun declination sensor on the dashboard - ACC I vehicles had no 'OFF' button, and the sun sensor was located at the passenger speaker grill. All 9000s earlier than the 1990.5 MY had the ACC I system regardless of their trim level (at least those destined for the US market). Test the ACC II system on all cars you look at, by holding the auto and vent button (the one that looks like <[]> ) simultaneously. Faults will appear in the display. Thats all I can think of for the moment. If anybody notices errors, please correct me.
Thanks, Taufan
