No, no, no. Changing the seal at the oil pump (towards the firewall) does NOT require engine removal nor trans separation. At least not on a Classic 900. A 99 is another story (just go get the engine crane...)
Remove all the belts, remove the AC pulley from the main pulley, block up the flywheel so the motor can't turn, use the BIG Saab wrench and socket to loosen the pulley bolt then slide the main pulley off.
Carefully inspect the main pulley for signs of rubber separation. If you see them replace the pulley.
Replace the seal in the oil pump cover (the old seal usually comes off with the pulley). Ywan Mason suggests also replacing the oil pump 'O' ring at this time.
Oil the inside & outside of the snout of the pulley & slip it on. It takes a PRECISE alignment for it to start on, but once it is started, it slips right on. Rotate it until you find the woodruff key & push it the rest of the way on.
Install the big bolt & tighten with big Saab wrench & torque wrench. Install AC pulley, install belts, remove flywheel blocking tool.
Done.
