Sounds like my '87 900S. Had the 'same' leak. Decided to do it right
so I could drive the car another 160K trouble-free miles and had the
engine R&R-ed at 165K miles by an independent import shop here in Toledo
which included having (supposedly) every gasket replaced, among other
work. The scheisters took me for $2,200 after which it still leaked oil
(but now at the other end). After two months of taking it back several
times to have the leaks (and other issues) resolved I gave up. It was a
lot of money for me but was right at the boundary where I figured it
wouldn't be worth taking 'em to court. That was 3 years ago (yes I
still don't have the money to fix this - poor grad student syndrome)
and the engine is as greasy as a slaughterhouse floor. The car runs
fine (now that I fixed their obvious screw-ups), but I'm adding a quart
every 1,000 miles every drop of which ends up on the undercarriage or
the ground. Needless to say the car no longer resides in the garage but
sits on our gravel driveway.
Upshot of the downswing: just commiserating with you. I suggest you
take it to another reputable shop because otherwise you will probably
just be throwing good money after bad.
