I am neither an engineer nor a mechanic(I'm an 'unruly bush mechanic', I hope to graduate to 'Shade Tree mechanic' someday!). However, from what I've seen on the Mercedes mailing lists, that isn't unusual for Redline. The biggest beef the M-B guys have with synthetic is it _can_ leak out a lot quicker than 'dino style'. $7.50/Qt. is kinda' expensive to leave in little drops in the parking lot(IMHO). I put Castrol Syntec in my turbo-diesel for the winter...just to see if it would help starting + get oil to the turbo ASAP. Other people on that list do the same thing. I think it leaked out faster than normal oil but it doesn't take long for oil to go dirty in a diesel so I can't say whether I could have kept it in for a while. I had the timing chain replaced (at nearly 200k, it was due) and the garage changed the oil. I guess the real question is: Do you _trust_ Redline or would you be happy with a 'lesser' oil like Castrol no39sdcx6spamx782 ~$4/Qt. or is frequent changing(3k) of the oil in a turbo the wise thing to do, regardless of oil?
