Blizzak winter tires
Posted by Glenn Wallace (more from Glenn Wallace) on Mon, 29 Nov 1999 18:28:13
Excuse the massive Saab/Subaru/Rally crosspost; I was wrong
about the new Blizzak WS-50. I said they were the replacement
for the MZ-02. They are *not*. They are however the newest
tire in the Blizzak line.

As the WS designation implies, it is in the Winter biter
series of snow tires, and it is a new version of the original
WS-15. It is 'snowflake symbol' rated for severe snow
conditions. (Note this is a voluntary rating by the
manufacturers, and the Rubber Manufacturer's
Association does not test or rate them.)

My set arrived today for the 9-5, and they are big'n'chunky,
and each chunk is heavily siped a'la the MZ-02 ('Ice gripper')
ice tires.

So, they're not as good on ice as the MZ-02 and MZ-01 (low
profile) ice grippers, but they're better in deep snow than the
MZ series (a much more open and chunky tread)and better
on ice and snow than the original WS-15 - *according to
Tire Rack*.

I will probably keep them rather than paying for return
shipping to get the MZ-02's. Their ice performance
is still probably better than our all season tires.

Glenn
