I have recently converted my classic 900 air con (Seiko model) to R134A from
R12. It cost AUS$400 for a Saab master tech to change all hoses, oil, and
use the SAAB conversion kit. This included a complete service/overhaul of
the system. The interesting thing is, I researched my options thoroughly,
and decided that this more expensive move was going to be cheaper long term.
Why? (a) because the factory fitted hose clamps come loose and let gas out -
best to replace them when converting; (b) because the valves (TX?) also wear
out quick, and were indeed worn on mine by 100,000kms, and they are cheaper
to replace when converting; (c) by changing the oil and a few minor parts
(can't remember what they were), I got a guarantee that my compressor would
last many years longer. These are very expensive to replace (approx
AUS$1000 - original part).

I could have just done the basic conversion - but what is the point if the
gas is going to leak out etc.... You can soon tell if your hoses need doing
by seeing if they swivel at their ends. They should not swivel at all. And
your compressor should be very quiet.

Hope this helps.

Simon....
