Many years ago when my car was running it started making a slight clanking sound so I stopped running it.So as not to cause damage. I talked to a Saab mech who told me to check the balance shaft (I think) for slop at the pulley. Yes, it has slop, and It may be the main shaft. Is it possible that changing the main shaft bearings will fix the problem? The mechanic also told me that replacement of the timing gear and chain may be necessary even though I stopped running the car. The Saab mechanic didn't see the car so he was surely doing his best, but at a disadvantage. The shaft moves quite a bit from side to side.
