AC Data and options
Posted by Chasisaac1 (more from Chasisaac1) on Thu, 1 Jul 1999 08:43:04
The old R12 is the ozone killing stuff that was outlawed years ago. However
under the treaty all R12 that was stored can still be used till depleted. Now
we have the R134a . This is the new, will not kill the ozone quite as fast,
AC gas.

>From the data I have gathered and read here there are a few ooptions

1. Do the conversion right. Have someone else do it replace the dryer, the
fitings and more. Cost $300 though I have not gotton quotes on this. I am in
NJ and will return home next week.

2. Change the dryer myself. Add in new R134a and go. Disadvantage the AC may
have a bad leak.

3. Just add in R134a drain the old R12a out first, Advantage, CHEAP about $40
US. Not to bad. Disadvangae: Can turn the old dryer in 'gel' and kill the
compressor. Very expenasive to replace.

4. Refill with R12 from pepboys for $134 and put off the earlier options.

>Also, what is the difference between R12a and R134a?
