I would say the synchro teeth on the second gear synchro are a bit mashed up, making the shift more difficult. This is more pronounced when the synchro has to work harder(engine is cold, downshifting at high speed). My advice: Don't downshift into second. New brake pads are much less expensive than a rebuilt tranny.
My $.02, but I am an amateur. Feel free to flame, or to correct my diagnosis. Anyone?
