Kicking down will put stress on gears .... ehmmm bearings (depending on what
they do of course) may have a heavy load but the pressure tends to be steady.
I would say kicking down is the equivalent of letting the clutch pedal rise
suddenly.

In general the feeling seems to be that auto boxes are more reliable whilst
they run (expensive when they break) and necessary for bigger engines. I
don't think SAABs fall into the category of bigger engines. The idea is that
on a big engine the auto box will control (together with engine mgmnt system)
kickdown, acceleration etc and will therefore protect the differential,
driveshafts etc. If you have a very big engine and drop the clutch a lot of
things could break.

A bit of consolation.
