The horrible 2003 reliability reflects the bad Consumer Reports rating. If there was a little more testing resulting in no 2003 model year, some glitches may have been fixed. However, the accountants' duties is to figure the bottom line, not the most reliable line.
My 2005 has been perfect. My 1990 was perfect for many years and near perfect for the later years. Lucky me.
Some stuff comes from a bad design. For example, the coating on the knobs wear out. It will happen to me. I've been careful so it's not worn yet. However, I do not walk on water. It will come in my car.
If you are skeptical, every time you need a repair, you'll think "see, lousy car". If you are forgiving, then you can drive many cars, except the very worst. If you are skeptical only for Saabs, but not other cars, then I'd not recommend a Saab until you face your true feelings and either resolve them or buy another car. (I am not a psychiatrist)
