Are you looking at manual transmission mileage? The 5 speed gives distinctly better mileage on the EPA test than the 6 speed - go figure. The EPA "mileage test" is really just a measure of the fuel used during the EPA emissions certification test, and the certification test schedule is *very specific* in terms of speed, acceleration, throttle, etc. In addition, the car no longer has an "upshift light", which means the car gets driven differently than when there is one. (the "driver" is required to follow the upshift light instructions if there is one, some other instruction if there isn't one).

Real world mileage isn't likely to change much, and highway cruising mileage should be a little better because of the taller 6th gear.
